KUALA LUMPUR: National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) has claimed that a Kelantan Wanita Umno leader and her family are being paid almost RM1 million a year for services rendered to the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (Yapeim).

On average, they are purported to receive RM81,700 per month.

NOW director, Akmal Nasir claimed that the political leader, who is the foundation’s deputy president, also holds seven posts and receives a monthly salary amounting to RM45,500.00.

“Her son is also involved with the foundation, and collects a salary of RM31,200 per month.

“On top of that, her husband has also been appointed as a fellow, with an income of RM5,000,” Akmal said in a press conference held at the NOW Centre on Wednesday.

Akmal stated that NOW was perplexed as to how the high-ranking members of the foundation, tasked with managing donations, loans, and revenue through Islam-compliant ventures, are able to secure such high salaries.

“Can the Prime Minister and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department imagine how all 588,930 of the foundation’s monthly contributors will feel, if they knew those tasked with overseeing the donations have failed to perform their duties?”

Akmal also said that the foundation president got paid RM73,000 per month, and added, “The president holds as many as 12 posts at the foundation, with the president and chairman’s posts netting him RM30,000.”

He also pointed out that the chairman of the foundation is also the president, while the deputy chairperson is also the deputy president and that between them, they hold seven positions respectively in the foundation and its subsidiaries.

“They’re members of the board of trustees but they’re also the executives. They may have abused the position to appoint themselves or to let themselves be appointed,” Akmal said.

He urged Jamil to clarify the situation at the foundation and said, “It is difficult to expect the Prime Minister to clarify the situation, so we are asking Jamil to step up”.

The foundation is under the purview of Prime Minister Najib Razak and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom.
